Group Therapy
Sometimes the best way to achieve a sense of well-being is by meeting with other people who have similar problems, under the guidance of a Mental Health Professional.

Adolescent Dialectic Behavior Therapy

How can it help?

Download the brochure in Adobe PDF.

Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for adolescents who have difficulty managing their emotions. It is aimed at changing the typical behavior patterns of emotionally challenged adolescents such as suicidal ideation, self-injury and other self-destructive behaviors.

DBT assumes that the adolescent wants to feel better and have a better quality of life. It is a combination of cognitive and behavioral therapy that teaches the adolescent to control emotions by developing a sense of self-acceptance. The therapist must validate and guide the adolescent to balance ways of thinking, feeling, and acting.

Our group series is an adaptation of Dialectic Behavior Therapy developed by Marsha Linehan, PhD Professor of Psychology and an Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington.

If a youth answers yes to one or more of the following questions, they could benefit from the DBT approach:

bullet

Do you become easily overwhelmed and not know how to calm yourself?

bullet

Do you feel suicidal or have thoughts of hurting yourself?

bullet

Do you often feel “out of control” and have a difficult time slowing yourself down?

DBT Skills Training is designed to teach new skills. It cannot provide the kind of support and insight required to integrate these skills into your everyday life.

Therefore, it is required that you are also seeing an individual therapist regularly.

You will benefit most if your therapist has DBT experience and training.

Adolescent DBT meets once a week on Monday in the evening from 6:30 to 8 pm. Group size is limited to ten.

Health insurance plans usually pay for group therapy. Clients without insurance coverage may be eligible for a sliding fee.
